Muxtape, a startup that quickly became a favorite of the Tumblr-set, has taken a nose dive, thanks to the machinations at RIAA. There are lot of folks bemoaning the loss of the service. To them, I have one word: 8Tracks.

I talked to the New York-based startup’s founder, David Porter, formerly of Live365, a few weeks ago and he walked me through the service. I have been using it sporadically and, well, it works better than Muxtape. (Thrillist thinks so, too — take their word over a Web geezer like us.) Essentially, 8tracks allows you to upload your own tracks and create a mix. Of course, you can create mixes from a library of tracks uploaded by others. Drag, drop, play!

How long before RIAA calls on these guys? They have applied for a small webcaster license, but that won’t be enough if the company gets popular. Peter Kafka says they they will “end up having to pay the same rates as the big guys, which basically translates to about 2 cents per listener, per hour this year, and will jump to 3 cents next year.” Porter remains undeterred!

A Big Picture

My latest mashup is an interactive graph that aggregates data from Google Trends for Websites into a single graph which can track hundreds of sites.

If you search for a domain you are interested in, it automatically gets added to the graph. Hopefully, over time, a large number of domains will get added to it, and we’ll get an even bigger picture of site traffic on the Internets.

Domains searched within the last hour are rendered in brighter colors, and gradually fade, so you can see what people are interested in.

I changed the coloring in this graph from the one shown in the previous post: red lines now indicate sites which are losing traffic.

Randy is currently recording a classical Theremin album and is looking for donations to help him complete the project.

New editor in table draw project

I made a new editor, for the table draw project, with this editor you can make drawings and animations by useing the HTML5 element "canvas" and javascript. This element is supported by Firefox (i disabled all other browsers for now.. and i have only tested it on a mac). The editor i made is adapted version of the canvas_demo. One cool feature i added is that it can make animated gifs, using the gif merge class, or it can output png24 images. Where did Wikipedia come from?

All those hours, all that work. Where did the time and effort come from?

Clay Shirky points out that it comes from the TV we're not watching.

Take a look at Netroidcomics, courtesy of Bert. Sure, some of these folks were at work, goofing off, but the real influx of time and energy we're seeing online comes from TV. Three, four or even six hours a day not spent doing virtually nothing. Multiply it by 800 million people online and suddenly, there's a huge influx of hours just waiting to be put to good use.

I don't watch TV and I don't go to meetings. You'd be amazed at the difference it makes.

While the last few years have been devoted to mostly trivial pursuits, I would imagine we're going to see a rapid acceleration in the quality and meaning of things we manage to create with our new-found time. At least I hope so.

With the new look for Google Maps, you can do all of the same things, but without the extra clutter. Find businesses (creamery near palo alto), addresses (6605 Delmar Blvd, St Louis, MO), and more (root beer in sf) from one search box. You might also notice the map is a tad bigger, and that it's easier to get full screen maps:

I hope the new design makes it easier to find everything you need. And incidentally, if you're ever in St. Louis, stop by 6605 Delmar. Particularly if you like root beer.

Knol is open to everyone

A few months ago we announced that we were testing a new product called Knol. Knols are authoritative articles about specific topics, written by people who know about those subjects. Today, we're making Knol available to everyone.

The web contains vast amounts of information, but not everything worth knowing is on the web. An enormous amount of information resides in people's heads: millions of people know useful things and billions more could benefit from that knowledge. Knol will encourage these people to contribute their knowledge online and make it accessible to everyone.

The key principle behind Knol is authorship. Every knol will have an author (or group of authors) who put their name behind their content. It's their knol, their voice, their opinion. We expect that there will be multiple knols on the same subject, and we think that is good.

With Knol, we are introducing a new method for authors to work together that we call "moderated collaboration." With this feature, any reader can make suggested edits to a knol which the author may then choose to accept, reject, or modify before these contributions become visible to the public. This allows authors to accept suggestions from everyone in the world while remaining in control of their content. After all, their name is associated with it!

Knols include strong community tools which allow for many modes of interaction between readers and authors. People can submit comments, rate, or write a review of a knol. At the discretion of the author, a knol may include ads from our AdSense program. If an author chooses to include ads, Google will provide the author with a revenue share from the proceeds of those ad placements.

We are happy to announce an agreement with the New Yorker magazine which allows any author to add one cartoon per knol from the New Yorker's extensive cartoon repository. Cartoons are an effective (and fun) way to make your point, even on the most serious topics.

Both The New York Times and Tripadvisor have created many innovative mashups -- from tracking The New York Times' Frugal Traveler on his national roadtrip, to mapping crime in New York City, to creating applications that millions of people use to rate restaurants. Google Suggests Sites for Your Profile

Google started to use the Social Graph API to suggest links that can be added to your public Google Profile. If you add links to sites that are connected to other sites using FOAF or the XFN microformat, Google makes it easy to import all the links. For example, if you have an account at FriendFeed, add a link to your FriendFeed page to import the sites you shared: videos uploaded at YouTube, Google Reader shared items, del.ico.us bookmarks etc.

Google's unified profiles are slowly added to all Google services that allow user-generated content. "A Google Profile is simply how you represent yourself on Google products — it lets you tell others a bit more about who you are and what you're all about. You control what goes into your Google Profile, sharing as much (or as little) as you'd like," explains Google. For now, the profiles are displayed next to the list of shared items from Google Reader, in the Google Books library and next to the custom maps, reviews and edits from Google Maps.

How (not to) pick a company spokesman

39 years ago, Neil Armstrong became the most famous person in the world.

He was an astronaut, of course, but there were dozens of people who could have done the technical work that Armstrong did. What Armstrong became was a spokesperson for an organization, a nation and a movement.

NASA did what many organizations do when picking someone to act as company spokesperson. They avoided risk, played it safe and chose someone who wouldn't make a ruckus.

What a shame.

Armstrong could have taught the world about science. He could have done work that would have won him a Nobel Peace Prize. He could have had a huge impact on his country and the world. Instead, he mostly disappeared.

Many organizations worry that if they put their clout behind an individual, he or she will gain notoriety and power and eventually double-cross the organization. So, instead, they go for bland.

As marketers, you already see the problem. It's like putting a tennis ball on the end of your sword. Sooner or later, people communicate with people. Sooner or later, your organization needs a voice. You take lots of risks when you market a product, and this one--the risk of an engaging and motivated spokesperson--is smarter than most.
